For the Ground Turkey (Optional)

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • cup water
  • 2 tablespoons prepared seasoning of choice (made from either recipe above)

Instructions

For the Basic Garlic Turkey Seasoning

  • Add 2 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, 1 ¼ teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper, 1 ¼ teaspoons granulated garlic, and 1 ¼ teaspoons onion powder to small mixing bowl. Stir spices together until well blended.
  • Transfer spice blend to airtight container and store in cool, dry place until ready to use.

For the Taco-Style Turkey Seasoning

  • Add 4 teaspoons chili powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 1 large pinch crushed red pepper flakes, ½ teaspoon ground cumin, 2 teaspoons kosher salt, and ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper to small mixing bowl. Stir spices together until well blended.
  • Transfer spice blend to airtight container and store in cool, dry place until ready to use.

To Use the Ground Turkey Seasoning

  • Place large skillet on stovetop over medium heat. Add 1 pound ground turkey to skillet and cook, stirring often to break ground turkey into smaller pieces, 5 minutes or until turkey is crumbled and no longer pink.
  • Reduce heat under skillet to low. Add ⅔ cup water and 2 tablespoons prepared seasoning of choice and stir to incorporate.
  • Simmer mixture, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until most of liquid has been absorbed.
  • After liquid has been absorbed, remove skillet from heat and serve seasoned ground turkey as desired.

Notes

  • Most dry seasoning packets (like taco seasoning packets) recommend using 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of seasoning for every 1 pound of ground meat.
  • Storage: Store seasoning blends in airtight containers in a cool, dry place, like your spice cabinet or pantry. Spice blends will keep approximately 4 months, depending on the starting age of the spices you used.
